Goombungee celebrates Australia Day

12 February 2018

The 2018 Goombungee Australia Day event was once again well attended by the community and surrounds. About 350 attended the breakfast with most staying for the formal awards ceremony. The jumping castle and inflatable slide was enjoyed by many children on the day in spite of it being a hot day. The community appreciates Cr Mike Williams making the trip out to meet with locals, speak and hand out the awards to the recipients. Guest speaker for the day was Major Steve Wardill who provided a true Australia Day speech detailing what it meant to be an Australian. Everything was kept running smoothly by the experienced and charming MC Glynn Robinson.

This year, Goombungee was lucky to have two of the three regional winners coming from the district. Young Citizen of the Year Bryce Riethmuller and Citizen of the Year Terry Reid were on hand to receive their awards from Cr Williams.

A big congratulations must also go to the local award winners with Jacaranda Day (organised by the Rosalie Shire Historical Society) taking out the Community Event category, Sarah Stewart-Koster receiving the Cultural Award and Dr Nina Machin being the worthy recipient of the Community Spirit Award.
