Aussies Awarded in Crows Nest and Highfields

Billies were heated, barbeques sizzled and echoes of the National Anthem could be heard far and wide.

Residents from all over the Toowoomba Region celebrated the Australian way of life and reflected on the achievements of community members who commit to making our community a better place for everyone.

In Crows Nest Cloud 9 entertained the 200-strong crowd with bush ballads and everyone's favourite Australian tunes. There was a re-enactment of Waltzing Matilda and the swagman even dropped in for a lamington and some damper before washing it down with a Bushells Tea. Cr Chris Tait proudly presented the Australia Day Awards to the Crows Nest recipients:

Citizen of the Year- Sarah (Rio) Mocock

Young Citizen of the Year- Valentina Holland

Cultural Award- The Munro Tramway Historical Group

Senior Sports Award- Lindsay Blinco

Junior Sports Award- Stephanie Hartwig

Community Event- In Studio Art Trail



Highfields Pioneer Village welcomed 5000 people through the gates in a day packed full of activities. From milking the cow to sheep shearing, Aboriginal story telling and a visit from Ned Kelly history came alive and everyone was treated to an amazing showcase of our Australian history. Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts MP welcomed the new citizens before Mayor Paul Antonio, Cr Bill Cahill and Senator Claire Moore presented the award winners.

Junior Sports- Ellen de Jong

Community Group- North Eastern Downs Lions Club

Community Event- Crave Food Festival
