Safe Active Street - Pierce Street, part of the West Creek pathway

Over the first half of 2024, Council worked to transition Pierce Street, South Toowoomba to one of Queensland’s first Safe Active Streets.

This is a shared street where those riding bikes have equal priority on the road. This has been created with a lower speed environment and design features to support safety for all road users and residents.

Patience and courtesy will be important as all road users adjust to this new design.

The key points for anyone using this street are :

  • The speed limit is now 30km/h. This applies to all road users.
  • People riding bicycles are to ride near the centre of the shared travel lane (the terracotta painted zone).
  • People driving cars and other motorised vehicles are to maintain 30km/h or less behind the person on a bicycle until safe to overtake, ensuring a distance of one metre from the rider.
  • You can cross the outside lines of the terracotta zone and drive in the overrun areas to safely overtake people riding bicycles or to pass an oncoming vehicle.
  • Standard road rules apply along this street and at intersections and all road users need to drive or ride in a safe and courteous manner.

This project is has been jointly funded by Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads through the Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.

This project has been developed from the Toowoomba Regional Council's Sustainable Transport Strategy, which can be viewed on the Council website: Toowoomba Region Sustainable Transport Strategy.
