Active Transport and Cycle Network Integration

As part of the Highfields Kratzke and O’Brien Roads Intersection (HKO) project, active transport infrastructure (walking and cycling) will be fully integrated into the upgraded intersections and associated road links in line with Council’s Active Transport and Safe System objectives.

Active transport improvements will be incorporated into the new generation roundabouts and upgraded road corridors at the following locations:

  • Highfields Road / Kratzke Road / O’Brien Road intersection
  • Highfields Road / Lauder Drive intersection
  • Highfields Road / Rogers Drive intersection (subject to confirmation following consultation with Education Queensland)
  • O’Brien Road corridor, including the existing alignment adjacent to the Highfields Tavern and the proposed realigned O’Brien Road
  • Associated road links, including:
    • O’Brien Road between Highfields Road and Balmoral Street, and
    • Highfields Road from east of the new roundabout through to Rogers Drive, including intersection upgrades at Lauder Drive and Rogers Drive.

Across these locations, the project will deliver:

  • Shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists, providing safe, direct and accessible connections to schools, the shopping precinct, community facilities, and the future town centre.
  • Raised wombat crossings with zebra crossings on all legs of the new generation roundabouts, prioritising pedestrians and cyclists over vehicle movements and improving safety at crossing points.
  • Set-back crossings to improve safety and accommodate queued vehicles.
  • Integration with the Principal Cycle Network, strengthening a key regional and local active transport corridor through Highfields.
  • Provision for future upgrades, with allowance for landscaped buffer areas where feasible to accommodate future widening or enhancement of active transport facilities as demand grows.

These improvements will significantly enhance walking and cycling connectivity within Highfields, improve access to public transport facilities (including the proposed Transit Hub), and support safe, continuous movement for pedestrians and cyclists through the upgraded intersections and along the corridor.

While these works improve access toward the Central Highfields area, the future development of Council-owned land at Central Highfields is not part of this roadworks project.
